Construction of Book
To begin, I took apart the book. I removed the cover and tore and cut the pages attaching the
cover to the first page. The pages tore away in one bunch from the spine as they had originally
been sewn. I removed the bookmark, pencil holder, and elastic that holds it together when closed.
I intended to reuse all 3 of these elements in my altered book, but the ribbon bookmark was quite
destroyed so I used a new one instead.
I then had the difficult decision of deciding how many images I wanted to print and use, as well as
which ones. There are 57 total images total and 6 major sections in a very loose chronological
order. These sections in order include: artwork/memes, immediate family/flowers/food, extended
family, nature, relationship, and new friends.
It is a bit difficult to describe, but I somewhat used intuition on what images should be included
and in which categories. Colour palette was also considered.
For cutting and pasting the images, I had to know exactly which image would go on each page so
I could measure. For each image, I placed them face down on the left hand page and marked
where all the corners laid.
I then drew a small frame within these dimensions with a ruler so I had
a guideline to cut along with my exacto knife. I did this process for each of the images. For
pasting, I generally used tape on the back side of the images, but for a few I used glue because I
still wanted the sketchbooks to be functional on certain pages.
To create the new cover of the board, I cut Masonite board into 3 pieces (each cover and the spine) and
used white school glue to bind them to a piece of white fabric.
With all of these pieces done, I assembled my elements by gluing the book to the spine and then
using folded sheets of paper to attach the first and last pages to the front and back covers of the
book.
